FLINT, Michigan—Rashida Tlaib, the country’s first Muslim, Palestinian-American congresswoman, will give a speech in honor of the Third Annual International Center of Greater Flint’s (ICGF) celebration of International Women’s Day on March 16 at Factory One.

The ICGF and The Link Incorporated, Flint Area Chapter will welcome Tlaib and women across Genesee County to Factory One for the event, which will feature international dining, networking, and reflection on the accomplishments of women from around the world.

“At last year’s Flint celebration, more than 100 women attended the local event. This year, that number is expected to increase as Genesee County women from various cultural backgrounds are expected to join women in cities across the world in this global celebration,” said the press release.

As the first Muslim woman to serve in the Michigan Legislature and as one of the first Muslim women to serve in the House of Representatives, Tlaib has been making history as she climbs the political ranks and her appearance at this year’s event is highly anticipated.

“It is about the politics. She is a first in many ways, and we would like to hear what it’s like to be the ‘first’ as a congresswoman in this era of politics,” said Phyllis Sykes, executive director and co-founder of ICGF. “The celebration is about the empowerment of women so the two go hand in hand.”

Set for 5:30-7:30 p.m., attendees are encouraged to mix and mingle upon arrival, with scheduled events set to start closer to 6 p.m.

To attend, tickets can be purchased for $40 on the ICGF website. For more information, call The International Center of Greater Flint at 810-877-3348 or email internationalcenterflint@gmail.com.

Update: the location has been changed to the Flint Farmers Market on 300 E. 1st St.
