Family-friendly rodeo featuring top Black rodeo athletes comes to Flint area in June

FLINT, Michigan — The City of Flint is teaming up with the Midwest Invitational Rodeo (MWIR) to host an exciting rodeo competition featuring top Black rodeo athletes at the Genesee County Fairgrounds on June 7 and 8, 2024.

The thrilling weekend promises to introduce families and kids to the exhilarating world of rodeo sports, spotlighting premiere Black cowboys and cowgirls alongside award-winning horses, steers, and bulls.

“Our kids deserve the chance to witness star rodeo athletes up close and personal, alongside the magnificent rodeo animals. It’s about expanding horizons and unlocking new possibilities,” said Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley in a recent press statement.

The event will feature a range of rodeo competitions, including:

Steer Wrestling: Cowboys on horseback pursue and wrestle steers to the ground, a daring feat first performed by Black cowboy Bill Pickett in the early 1900s.

Women’s Steer Event: Cowgirls race at high speeds to grab tape from the backs of steers, showcasing their agility and precision.

Bull Riding: Brave cowboys attempt to stay atop bucking bulls using only one hand for a heart-stopping eight seconds.

Barrel Racing: Cowgirls display their speed and skill as they navigate a series of barrels.

Bareback Bronc Riding: Cowboys aim to stay on the back of bucking horses for eight seconds, showcasing strength and balance.

“Our mission is to inspire and foster a sense of cultural pride by showcasing cowboys and cowgirls with a legacy spanning three generations and over a century of history,” said Midwest Invitational Rodeo Owner and CEO Nicole Scott. “When families and children experience the adrenaline rush and athletic prowess of rodeo competition, they gain a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage of African American rodeo.”

Attendees can look forward to interacting with the athletes and enjoying reenactments of Old West legends, including the real-life inspiration behind the Lone Ranger.

Additional attractions include a food truck rally, vendors, 4H animal exhibitions, and opportunities with skilled trades recruiters.

Tickets are priced at $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the event. The Genesee County Fairgrounds is located at 6130 E. Mt. Morris Rd. in Mt. Morris Township.
