Neighborhood eyesores getting top priority for 2019 Land Bank demolitions

The Genesee County Land Bank is demolishing about 30 percent more homes than last year — and demolitions are up 342 percent from 2002. The list of top priorities for commercial demolitions includes a former apartment complex, trailer park, laundromat, gas station/hair salon, and auto repair shop.

Flint-area Young Innovators look to solve problems large and small

The Young Innovators Fair is basically an old-school science fair on steroids. Hosted by Kettering University, it featured 102 students in fourth through seventh grade from five local schools with inventions that ran the gamut from stroller skis to a conditioner brush and styrofoam dissolving liquid to paw pads for pets.  

In a collaborative effort, Genesee Health System will be operating the Behavioral Health Emergency Center program supported by Hurley’s Emergency Department where they plan to address the needs of the entire community.

Culinary arts program to double — perhaps triple — at Mott’s new downtown Flint location

The 36,000-square-foot, nearly 100-year-old building is being fully renovated to feature a bar area for mixology classes, multiple kitchens to teach every level of culinary classes, classroom space, a conference area, demonstration kitchen as well as baking, pastry and confections labs. It will also be home to a Coffee Beanery and Applewood Cafe.

Built by Flint, serving the world: Kettering University celebrates 100 years

Founded October 20, 1919, the university has been inherently tied to the city that is its home. In recent years, Kettering University has played a critical role in developing the University Avenue Corridor Coalition, bringing businesses to the community, saving Atwood Stadium, building University Square park, and cleaning up blight.

Hurley’s first McKenna’s Beauty Bar Box was given on Friday to one of McKenna Schummer’s friends and classmates: Lauren Stansburry, 12, was diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer a year after her friend.
