In Pictures: Beecher and Hamady varsity basketball celebrate 6-0 winning streak at Carmody Classic

FLINT, Michigan — The Cardmody Classic, formerly known as 'The Gotta Get It Hoop Classic,' kicked off with two undefeated Flint area teams on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023.

The annual tradition was hosted at Grand Blanc High School which brought together the best of Michigan high school basketball talent. This year’s games featured Beecher Bucs vs. Saginaw Arthur Hill Lumberjacks, Hamady Hawks vs. Hamtramck Cosmos, Carman-Ainsworth Cavaliers vs. Detroit Cass Tech, and East Lansing Trojans vs. Grand Blanc Bobcats.

Beecher senior Robert Lee Jr. was not only selected as Most Valuable Player of the first game but also scored an all-time highest-scoring record for the Carmody Classic with 42 points. Lee Jr. led the Buccaneers’ win against Arthur Hill with a final score of 77- 44. Keyonta Menefield, scored the second-highest amount of points for Beecher with 12 field goals at the end of the game.

Lee Jr. continues to draw attention as one of the best in Flint with an average of 32.2 points a game. Marquise’ Gray, Head Coach, commented on watching Lee Jr. continue to excel.

“What can I say about that kid...from the time he was a freshman until now, he has grown so much and done everything that’s required of him. Now he’s reaping the benefits of all his hard work,” Gray said proudly.

Beecher defeated Arthur Hill 77-44 (Jenifer Veloso | Flintside) Hamady started the second game of the classic, attempting to find their rhythm, but Hamtramck closed out the first half leading 27-24. After the half, Hamady returned to the court on fire with an 18-0 run in the third quarter. Hamady’s run continued into the fourth starting with five field goals, creating an exciting 23-point run.

Hamady defeated Hamtramck 70-55 (Jenifer Veloso | Flintside) Jakobie Boose was given the Most Valuable Player of the game award for his instrumental role in changing the tide of the second half, scoring three crucial three-pointers. Boose’s second-half 18-point streak helped Hamady close the game with a strong 70-55 win against the cosmos. Hamady currently remains undefeated.

“We got off to a rocky start,” said Head Coach Lamont Torbert. “I think it was a little bit of nerves and playing in front of a big crowd. But once we started playing Hamady basketball, things started going our way. At halftime, we made a couple of adjustments and calmed our guys down. We’re just gonna play one game at a time, keep improving and hopefully make a run into the playoffs,”  Torbert said.

Beecher and Hamady both 6-0 remained undefeated as they faced each other again at Hamady on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023.
