FLINT, Michigan — On Saturday, Sept. 7, the clothing brand DISTVNT held the grand opening of its new storefront in Flint Township. Located at 4205 Miller Rd Suite c16, the store sells a variety of DISTVNT-branded clothes, including T-shirts, jeans, shorts, hooded sweatshirts, and much more. The brand and store are owned by Flint native Jock Giles.
With a large smile, after using a power scrubber to clean the store's floor, Giles said that it all started with him selling his T-shirts out of Dado Market, a convenience store on Saginaw St.
Giles soon moved DISTVNT to a house on E. Patterson St. and converted it into his operations center during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although times were difficult, the local owner was determined to keep the clothing line going and was inspired by the practices of big-name department stores.
As Walmart and Target were doing curbside delivery services, Giles decided to adopt the format as well, assigning parking spots for customers who came to pick up their orders via phone. Giles wore a mask as he brought the customer's items to them personally while following ADA regulations.
With COVID-19 safety restrictions ending in June of 2021, DISTVNT has become one of the premiere clothing lines in Flint with the importance of simple yet quality designs being the fuel for its success. Since that time, the brand has added women's and kids' clothing with accessories like coats, bags, hats underwear, and belts.
The brand's name was inspired by Giles' lowkey personality and introverted nature which was often perceived as him being 'distant.' With the growth and expansion of the clothing brand, he hopes to change the perception of the word one garment at a time.
