Flint's 'Artschool Dropout' holds unique fundraiser to attend Artexpo New York 2025

FLINT, Michigan — Keyon Lovett, who goes by 'Artschool Dropout,' names this season of his life a reintroduction to his hometown. The stigma that is sometimes associated with returning home only motivates him to represent Flint in a way that is propelling for those who may not know the possibilities of advancement without art school. He humbly reflects on his prosperity within just the last year.

Lovett’s art references musicians like Kendrick Lamar as he uses life events and his experiences growing up in Flint to create captivating visual stories. In many ways, his gift makes room for him. The underlying messages in his work illuminate Flint, family, and religion.

Last year, Lovett attended ArtPrize in Grand Rapids for the second year, taking home a winning title. After receiving the Buckham Fine Arts Project 2024 Emerging Artist Fellowship, he held a solo show titled 'Visible' to share his gift in a way that illustrates his family and upbringing.

Redwood Media Group will host the New York show at Pier 36 in Manhattan’s Lower Eastside and will attract over 75,000 attendees. Fundraising for this event is crucial as Lovett is preparing to take this opportunity, with his wife and children by his side.

Currently, his art studio is furnished with expressive one-of-a-kind 12’’ x 12’’ paintings that will be offered to those who donate $100 to the fundraiser to express gratitude for their support of his vision. Lovett’s goal is to reach 100 donors of $100. Each donor will receive an exclusive gift. The gift is the individuality of each piece as these are unique paintings that will not be recreated.

There are 90 of 100 paintings left. All proceeds will contribute to Lovett’s blueprint in New York.

“Buying a piece of art from an artist that is on the rise is the same thing as buying stock,” said Lovett. “As the artist begins to develop in their career, the value of their artwork continues to increase, even after it has been purchased.”

Though he is preparing for New York, Lovett is still committed to the well-being of his hometown. He plans to host a men’s panel in Flint for Men’s Health Weekend in June.

The panel will consist of men from various industries and mental health professionals sharing insight on how they stay well-rounded and deal with symptoms of stress, depression, or just feelings of being overwhelmed.
