Flint teachers receive additional resources from the Flint Classroom Support Fund, FIA, and FIM

FLINT, Michigan — Teachers in Flint Community Schools received $100 grants to help purchase classroom supplies thanks to a gift from the Flint Classroom Support Fund Holiday Grants program. 

Thanks to a grant from the Bishop Trust, the fund will provide $22,300 total in grants to teachers. The money is used in each classroom to support students’ education needs by purchasing supplies and other materials to support teaching and learning. 

FCS principals picked up the donations on December 14, at the Flint Institute of Arts from special guests that included Santa Claus, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, FCS Superintendent Kevelin Jones, carolers from the Flint Institute of Music, and several volunteers.

“Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire,” said J. Dallas Winegarden Jr., president of The Flint Classroom Support Fund. “We are grateful for support from the Bishop Trust and our community partners. These classroom grants help us directly support teachers and students and make a difference in their lives and education.”

In addition to the grants, each teacher is receiving a free one-year family membership at the Flint Institute of Arts and vouchers for a free performance at the Flint Institute of Music.

“We are proud to support the Flint Classroom Support Fund and to recognize the vital work teachers do in our community,” said John Henry, executive director of the Flint Institute of Arts. “We are also excited to provide more opportunities for teachers to visit the FIA and see firsthand the many in-person and virtual resources available to support instruction and creativity in the classroom and beyond.”

For the past 36 years, the Flint Classroom Support Fund has awarded more than $439,000 in funding to 572 classrooms. Those grant dollars have impacted more than 15,000 children in the community.
