Free HIV testing offered in Flint on National HIV Testing Day, June 27

FLINT, Michigan — The Genesee County Health Department, in partnership with the Genesee Free Medical Clinic, will host a free National HIV Testing Day community event on Friday, June 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2437 Welch Blvd. in Flint.

The event offers free, confidential HIV testing and aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and empower residents of Flint and Genesee County to take charge of their health. In addition to testing, attendees can enjoy free food, ice cream, games, prizes, and access to educational resources in a supportive, family-friendly atmosphere.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.2 million people were living with HIV in the U.S. in 2022. Early diagnosis is key to better health outcomes and preventing the spread of the virus. Testing is recommended for everyone aged 13 to 64 at least once in their lifetime, with more frequent testing for individuals at higher risk.

HIV—short for Human Immunodeficiency Virus—attacks the body’s immune system and, if untreated, can lead to AIDS. Though HIV has historically affected Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities at higher rates due to social and structural inequities, modern treatments allow people living with HIV to lead long, healthy lives and prevent transmission to others.

You should consider getting tested if you:

• Are a man who has had sex with another man
• Have had multiple sexual partners since your last HIV test
• Have shared needles or injection equipment
• Have exchanged sex for drugs or money
• Have been treated for STIs, hepatitis, or TB
• Have had sex with someone whose history you don’t know or who meets any of the above

HIV is most commonly transmitted through anal or vaginal sex, sharing injection drug equipment, or from parent to child during childbirth or breastfeeding.

Organizers invite the community to join them for an afternoon of connection, support, and education. Together, they hope to reduce stigma, promote early detection, and build a healthier, more informed Genesee County.
