Free preschool seats still open in Genesee County’s Great Start Readiness Program
Genesee County’s Great Start Readiness Program gives local four-year-olds a strong foundation for kindergarten and lifelong learning.

FLINT, Michigan — The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), administered through the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD), offers free, high-quality preschool education for eligible four-year-olds across Genesee County. The program is designed to help children develop the academic and social-emotional skills needed for a smooth transition into kindergarten.
Each day in a GSRP classroom, children participate in structured, hands-on activities that introduce early literacy, math, and problem-solving skills. Lessons include recognizing letters and numbers, exploring basic science concepts, and building curiosity and critical thinking. Teachers also focus on helping children develop social and self-help skills such as cooperation, communication, and self-control.
GSRP emphasizes individualized support to meet the needs of every child. Educators tailor instruction to each child’s learning style and developmental level, providing additional guidance when needed. The program also encourages strong family engagement. Parents and caregivers are given resources to support learning at home and are connected to community programs that promote early childhood development.
Studies show that participation in high-quality preschool programs can improve school readiness and long-term academic outcomes. In Genesee County, GSRP plays a role in ensuring more children enter kindergarten prepared to learn and participate in group settings. These early learning opportunities are significant for children who may not otherwise have access to structured early education before starting school.
In addition to providing learning support for children, GSRP supports families by offering practical tools, educational materials, and community referrals. Families receive help navigating services that address early childhood needs, which can make it easier to reinforce learning at home.
There are still open seats available in GSRP classrooms throughout Genesee County. Families interested in applying can visit 591KIDS.org or call 810-591-KIDS for more information and assistance with the application process.
Through the GSRP, Genesee County continues to make early education more accessible for local families. By providing children with a supportive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment, the program helps prepare young learners for success in kindergarten and beyond.
