The “Health is Wealth” health fair offers free medical and food services to Flint residents

The Flint Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi will host the 'Health is Wealth' community health fair this weekend, providing Flint and Genesee County residents with free medical and nutritional services.

FLINT, Michigan — This weekend, the Flint Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi will host the ‘Health is Wealth’ community health fair to provide Flint and Genesee County residents with quality health services necessary to improve health outcomes.

“Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. cares about the community and one of our objectives is to inspire service in the public interest, so the goal of this event is to connect Flint and Genesee County residents with free medical and nutritional services,” said Jamal Hyatt, Co-chair of the Kappa Alpha Psi Flint Alumni Chapter.

According to Hyatt, the idea to host a community health fair came from the shared concern of health outcomes and rising disparities between race, socio-economic, and zip codes by local leaders. The alarming statistics served as the driving force for the collective partnership with Crim Fitness Foundation and Hamilton Community Health Network to make this community initiative come to life.

The ‘Health is Wealth’ community health fair will take place on Saturday, April 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Holmes STEM Academy, located at 6602 Oxley Drive in Flint.

Residents can expect free access to several health services, including vaccinations offered in partnership with Hamilton Community Health Network.

Free health services include the following:

“The residents will have access to free health assessments, free flu, and COVID-19 vaccines, and free mental health assessments,” said Hyatt. “Crim Nutrition will be on-site to provide residents with healthy recipes and fresh fruits and vegetables. Kappa Alpha Psi will also be giving away two $50 gift cards each hour beginning at 11:00 a.m.”

Meridian Health has also pledged to provide a $25 gift card to anyone who receives a COVID-19 or flu vaccination. Enhanced Chiropractic will also be at the health fair to offer free chiropractic assessments. Additional partners and vendors like For-Mar Nature Preserve and The Mass Transportation Authority will be present.

“John Powell of UC Berkeley promotes targeted universalism as a methodology to improve health outcomes for specific populations,” said Hyatt. “This is how we hope to galvanize the community to promote better health outcomes. The ‘Health is Wealth’ health fair is a targeted effort to improve health outcomes for the residents of our community.”
