FLINT, Michigan — The African American Film Series, an annual celebration of Black artistry and storytelling, has returned to Flint for its milestone 10th season. Hosted by
Communities First, Inc. (CFI) in partnership with the
Flint Institute of Arts (FIA), this free monthly event has become a cornerstone of the local arts scene, showcasing films that uplift, educate, and inspire.
“It is a tremendous honor to have hosted the African American Film Series for a decade,” said Glenn Wilson, President and CEO of Communities First, Inc. “We are grateful to the community for their support which allows us to celebrate the voices of African American directors, actors, and creatives while empowering our community with new insights.”
The 2024–2025 season, running from November through February offers audiences a chance to engage with compelling stories while enjoying an evening of cultural enrichment. Each screening at the FIA includes a complimentary dinner and live music at 5:30 PM, followed by the film at 6:45 PM. Afterward, expert-led discussions dive into the films’ themes and impact.

Upcoming Films- 'Farming While Black' (Dec. 19, 2024): A documentary exploring the challenges and resilience of Black farmers reclaiming their heritage and land.
- 'MLK/FBI' (Jan. 9, 2025): An investigative film uncovering the FBI’s surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr. and its implications for Black activism.
- 'This Is My Black' (Feb. 13, 2025): A vibrant portrayal of Black youth navigating their identities through art and music while addressing systemic challenges.
The series opened on Nov. 14 with '
Butterfly in the Sky,' a documentary celebrating the legacy of the PBS show '
Reading Rainbow' and its impact on literacy.
Essence Wilson, CFI’s Chief Strategy Officer, emphasized the series’ role in exposing audiences to new perspectives. “We strive to choose films that provide opportunities for discovery and celebrate diversity in our community,” she said.
This year’s series is supported by a range of sponsors, including the FIA, Genesee Health System, and Mid-Michigan NOW.
