Renowned Detroit artist Allie McGhee to speak at MW Gallery this weekend

FLINT, Michigan — Detroit-based artist Allie McGhee, a cornerstone of the Detroit art scene since the 1960s, is set to host a public talk at Flint’s MW Gallery on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2:00 PM. The free event will be moderated by Michaela Mosher, MW Gallery’s manager, offering attendees a unique opportunity to hear McGhee discuss his evolution as an artist and his approach to abstract art.

McGhee, born in West Virginia in 1941 and raised in Michigan, is an Eastern Michigan University graduate. His career began with figurative and semi-abstract works, but he quickly embraced abstraction, focusing on the energy of his pieces rather than their literal content.

Over the decades, his work has gained recognition and featured in exhibitions nationwide, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the California African American Museum in Los Angeles, and Harper’s in New York.

The talk coincides with MW Gallery’s current exhibition, 'Beyond the Physical World: Abstraction from the Mott-Warsh Collection,' running now until January 25, 2025. The exhibition celebrates abstract art from the Mott-Warsh Collection, showcasing works by artists of the African diaspora and those who reflect on it.

McGhee’s art is part of numerous esteemed public collections, including the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. His abstract style continues to inspire both artists and art enthusiasts alike.

MW Gallery is located at 815 S. Saginaw St. and welcomes visitors Thursdays through Saturdays with extended hours on the second Friday of each month for Flint ARTWALK. For more information, visit m-wc.org online or call (810) 835-4900.
