FLINT, Michigan — The City of Flint is set to launch its new Peer Mediation Program which aims to equip students with leadership and conflict resolution skills to create a more positive school culture. A kickoff celebration at Southwestern Classical Academy will mark the launch on Monday, Jan. 13, at 8:00 a.m., uniting students, staff, and community police officers to celebrate this step forward.
The program has already enrolled 40 students which includes five participants from Flint Southwestern Classical Academy, five from Accelerated Learning Academy, and ten from several participating elementary and middle schools.
Each student mediator will undergo structured training to develop communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills, allowing them to mediate disputes among their peers effectively.
“Peer mediation is a proven method for addressing conflicts constructively, and we are excited to bring this opportunity to our youth,” said Latrese Brown, Program Director for the Community-Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative. “This program not only supports academic success by reducing disruptions but also helps students develop critical life skills such as communication, empathy, and leadership.”
