FLINT, Michigan—This is about training. Exercising. Staying stronger. It’s all about brain power and taking full advantage of yours.
A Growth Mindset Summit is set for 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, August 24, at the UM-Flint Theatre. Hosted by GearUp2Lead, the event is free and designed to build on the organization’s motto: “Skills are built, not born.”
“The teaching is that the brain is a muscle and we can learn anything,” said Winston Stoody, executive director of GearUp2Lead. “It’s all about praising the process and the effort versus the outcome.”
Those attending will learn more about and get tools to develop a growth mindset—a way of thinking that allows for personal growth and increased success. The guest speakers are Travis Thomas, who spearheads the “Yes, and” campaign, and Trevor Ragan, founder of Train Ugly. Both have extensive experience helping professional athletes, business leaders, and students reach their full potential.
“We try to change mindsets from defeated to determined—and that’s how we do it, by teaching growth mindset,” added Stoody, who also operates GearUp Academy, an alternative high school located in downtown Flint.
Parents, educators, mentors, and more are encouraged to come out and learn more on growth mindset.
