Rx Kids program expands to Kalamazoo to support expectant mothers and infants

FLINT, Michigan — Kalamazoo is making history with the launch of Kalamazoo Rx Kids, a groundbreaking program designed to provide financial support to expectant mothers and newborns in the city. Starting today, eligible participants can enroll in the initiative, which provides a one-time $1,500 cash grant during mid-pregnancy and $500 per month for the first year of a child’s life — with no income restrictions or spending limitations.

The program is an expansion of Flint Rx Kids, an initiative that aims to improve maternal and infant health outcomes while alleviating financial strain on families. Dr. Mona Hanna, pediatrician and director of Rx Kids, expressed confidence in the impact of the program.

"When Rx Kids launched in Flint one year ago, the goal was to build an effective program that could be replicated statewide," she said. "We are certain that, just like in Flint, Rx Kids will change the trajectory of a generation of families and the entire Kalamazoo community."

The program is open to all City of Kalamazoo residents who are pregnant or have a child born on or after Feb. 1, 2025. Eligible families can sign up during pregnancy or within six months of birth, with cash assistance beginning at enrollment.

Jameca Patrick-Singleton, executive director of Cradle Kalamazoo, emphasized the significance of Rx Kids in reducing infant mortality rates, particularly for Black babies in Kalamazoo County. "Rx Kids is another critical tool to ensure families receive dignified support and resources," she said.

With a goal of $5 million per year, the program has already secured $10 million in funding for its first two years, thanks to a final commitment from the Kalamazoo Community Foundation (KZCF) through its new Mobilizing Grant. Other funders include the State of Michigan, Bronson Children’s Hospital, United Way of South Central Michigan, and numerous local foundations.

Alyssa Stewart, Chief Community Impact Officer at KZCF, celebrated the milestone. "We are proud to be part of such a dedicated network of funders working to make Kalamazoo more equitable for our babies and families," she said.

To mark the launch, a community celebration will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. Attendees can enjoy a planetarium show and interactive activities, and the first 100 guests will receive swag bags filled with essential items for new families.
