Flint native Terralisa McBride finds peace of mind in new book 'Faith Through Poetry: God's Will'

FLINT, Michigan — Flint poet Terralisa McBride grew up in an environment that did not encourage a relationship with God. Her upbringing was filled with trials and tribulations but she carried a resilient spirit that transcended her difficult circumstances. To cope, she wrote poetry that reflected the struggles of those seeking peace of mind amidst life's chaos and confusion.

In July, she published her book, 'Faith Through Poetry: God's Will,' which contains her innermost thoughts and desires for God.

McBride fondly remembers her supervisor and mentor, George Skaff, who played a crucial role in her life. She has been with Skaff Furniture Carpet One since 1996 and attributes much of her achievements to the support Skaff provided while she worked, raised her children, and pursued her passion for poetry. Skaff took a chance on McBride and continues to encourage her to move forward, even after his transition in March of this year.

Flintside caught up with McBride to talk about the necessity of faith, her relationship with God, her new collection of poetry, and what she's learned through the power of the written word.

Flintside: Why is faith essential to having a positive human experience?

Terralisa McBride: “I feel we can all live on this earth because we are God's creation. His love is within us all but some seem to stray away. If we choose to make God a habit and give Him glory, we can walk in the faith He has set forth for us and we will be covered by His grace and mercy.”

Flintside: How will you continue encouraging others to pursue faith in God?

T. McBride: “By first believing in his power which brings me joy to spread the gospel. I will constantly be kind to others to show how He will have favor over souls that follow His teachings.”

Flintside: What does being a Woman of God mean to you?

T. McBride: “To be a woman of God is so thrilling. When He met me at my lowest, I thought I had it together but as issues kept occurring, I soon found out that I couldn’t make it without His love. So when I gave myself to the lord, His promise to provide me with what I needed was plentiful. I look back and say how did I not see my wrongs? All the wrongs have taught me to be right and to hold on to God's unchanging hand.”

Flintside: How has your relationship with the St. Mark Baptist Church of Flint impacted your life?

T. McBride: “St. Mark is my second home. The entire church and outreach center has been a great building block for my faith. When I started a little over 3 years ago, I was lost broken, and beside myself. Pastor Thompson is truly a man of God and I feel the love of GOD is present every time I enter the building.”

Flintside: Are you planning to participate in or host more poetry workshops?

T. McBride: “Yes. As soon as the opportunity presents itself, I will be happy to be a part of it. I am out here self-published and trying to fit in the plan God has for me. I write creative work for anyone in need of a good word for events and special occasions. I love speaking and meeting new people so the sky is the limit.”

Flintside: What have you learned about yourself through poetry?

T. McBride: “Through poetry, I’ve learned that the pen truly is mightier than the sword. And that as long as I’m able to pick up a pen I know the lord will provide me with a good word to share with His people. I’ve also become in tune with my inner self. I learned to love myself more and give my best in all that I do. I know through my poetry, God is real and I feel him.”
