FLINT, Michigan — The JaVale McGee Flint City Pro-Am Basketball Summer League returns for another year at International Academy of Flint. The series of games started in late-June, has run every weekend through July, and will officially end on Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

The eight-team summer league consists of college basketball players, former college players, and professional athletes mostly from the Flint area. The admission fee to watch the games is just $3.00.

With local summer league basketball being on hiatus for several years, Flint native Rory Jones has been at the helm of the league for the second year. “My son plays college basketball and a host of his friends,” said Jones. “Flint has a lot of talent from the city, semi-pro, and overseas. We wanted to give them a place to play in the summer as we had. We had a place to play so me and JaVale wanted to reciprocate that.”

The community and basketball junkies have welcomed back the league with open arms not knowing what obstacles had to be overcome to make this happen.

“We had to make sure we had the right gym space and what type of players to search for, we wanted to cater to the college kids,” said Jones. “We had to call college coaches also. Once they realized our vision for the program, they wanted to play.”

Jones added he gets happy when he sees the kids, middle-aged and older people having fun. “Just seeing people talking and getting along and enjoying basketball. That’s the biggest thing,” he said.

The league’s founder JaVale McGee made a special appearance this past weekend and played for his Team McGee squad along with Michigan State basketball standout Tre Holloman and Israeli Basketball Premier League star Marcus Bingham Jr.
