In honor of Black History Month, Mott Community College presents internationally known Artist Ted Ellis who will discuss “Chronicling the African American Struggle, Resilience, and Perseverance” in a community event February 25, at 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This event is FREE and open to the public via livestream at https://youtu.be/Vib8yFMR-a8 Ellis will also present at the MCC All Employee meeting and at a student forum earlier in the day.

Ted Ellis is an American artist and former environmental chemist. Ellis is best known for his African American-themed art and styles which blend elements of folk art, naturalism and impressionism. His personal rendition of Barack Obama in acrylic, “Obama, the 44th President,” was presented in honor of the 2009 Presidential Inauguration.

Ellis is the first African American artist to be appointed to a federal commission. The 400 Years of African American History Commission established by the Department of Interior is responsible for planning and creating programs that will recognize and advance the historical and cultural contributions of African Americans since 1619 under PL115-102. The official federal logo and seal, as well as the 400th Distinguished Service Award was created by Ellis. Each will become part of the U.S. National Archives.

Ellis’ artistic talents have provided him the opportunity to be appointed as Scholar-in-Residence at Old Dominion University. His art business has sold more than 1.75 million fine art products, and he works with a number of prominent corporations. He is also known for his community work, especially advancing arts in children’s education.
