FLINT, Michigan — Mott Community College’s Workforce and Economic Development Department has partnered with Consumers Energy to be a training site for the Electric Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program.

The program prepares students for careers as electrical power-line installers and repairers, working on cables or wires used in electrical power or distribution systems and may also include erecting poles and light- or heavy-duty transmission towers.

“Many people rely on electrical power line installers and repairers every day,” said Robert Matthews, Associate Vice President for Workforce and Economic Development, in a news release. “This career field is growing, with more than 100 job openings each year, and a pay range of $60,000+ annually.”

The program requires eight steps and a three-month time commitment to complete (NOTE: completion of the program doe not guarantee employment with Consumers Energy). The steps are:

  1. Enroll in the MCC EMPOWER program online or by calling (810) 232-2555;
  2. Take the four foundational bundle courses at MCC: Energy Industry Fundamentals; Industrial Safety; Basic Electricity; Linework Physical Fitness;
  3. Attend a Consumers Energy information session;
  4. Complete an online profile for the EMPOWER program through Consumers Energy;
  5. Submit current driving record and complete drug screening;
  6. Attend two Consumers Energy climbing clinics (must be 18 or older);
  7. Attend and pass a Consumers Energy three-day orientation; and
  8. Attend and pass a Consumers Energy 11-week climb school.
