FLINT, Michigan — Flint native Trey McKenney, a five-star guard and the top-ranked basketball recruit in Michigan, narrowed down his college of choice last month at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. With family and friends in attendance, the Orchard Lake St. Mary’s senior chose to stay close to home, announcing his commitment to the University of Michigan.

During the announcement, McKenney reached into his backpack with the help of his mother, Jasmine, and pulled out a Michigan jersey with a big smile on his face. When he reached for the Michigan hat on the table before him and put it on his head, the room exploded with applause.

Michigan hasn’t had a player from Flint since former Northwestern High School basketball standouts Glen Rice (1985-89) and Leon Derricks (1992-94).

McKenney says that Michigan has always been his dream school since he was a kid which played a factor in him committing to the Wolverines. His mother Jasmine added that all the sacrifices the family made were well worth it for this moment.

As McKenney prepares for his next big journey, he is ready for the challenge to win another state championship and leave his legacy by being the next Mr. Basketball winner from Flint since Kelvin Tolbert in 2001.
