Women in Technology Day planned at Mott Community College

FLINT, Michigan — As part of a monthlong celebration intended to raise awareness around Career and Technical Education opportunities, Mott Community College will host a Women in Technology Day — which will include a free showing of the movie, “Hidden Figures.”

February is designated nationally as Career and Technical Education (CTE) month, which will also include awareness hugs on campus to let students know what occupational and career fields Mott programs can prepare students for as well as popup events at MCC’s Clio, Lapeer, Fenton and Howell locations. 

Women in Technology Day will be Feb. 22 and include the showing of “Hidden Figures” at 6 p.m. at MCC’s Regional Technology Center. The public is invited to attend. 

About 13 million postsecondary students nationwide receive Career and Technical Education, said Madonna Jackson, disadvantaged/LEP coordinator in the Learning Center at MCC. 

“CTE is a major part of the solution to myriad national economic and workforce problems, such as high school dropout rates, a weakened economy, global competitiveness and massive layoffs,” Jackson said. 

Jackson works directly with Career and Technical Education students to help them complete their degree and get jobs. 

“The activities planned over the month of February will illustrate the rigor and relevance CTE courses offer our students,” said Jackson who works directly with CTE students to help them complete their degree and enter the workforce. “By partnering with the business community, CTE programs are investing in students and providing them with the latest technology and skills that will prepare them to become successful employees and future leaders.”

MCC also will work with community partners to brainstorm ideas that may attract students of all ages to careers in CTE as part of the celebration this month.
