Day of Giving inspires 1,900 good deeds in 19 hours in Genesee County

Their goal: Simple, but big.

On May 31, 2019, the Genesee Intermediate School District hosted its annual Day of Giving and staff from throughout the county set out to perform 1,900 acts of kindness in 19 hours. This is the second year the GISD has hosted its Day of Giving and increased its count from the 1,800 good deeds in 18 hours from the inaugural year.

The event included 28 planned projects, Superintendent Lisa Hagel said. Some good deeds — such as sending care packages sent to troops overseas and donating supplies to the Humane Society — were done ahead of time, but most of the staff’s efforts were on May 31. 

A round of breakfasts across the county kickstarted the day with donuts and coffee for UPS delivery drivers and a military veterans special breakfast at Genesee Career Institute. 

GISD teams stopped by ELGA Credit Union to support the Flint Diaper Bank and continued the kindness for babies and moms by delivering hundreds of items —including diapers, baby clothes and other supplies to a local shelter. 

At Hurley Medical Center, GISD volunteers passed out goodie bags to the nurses. Elsewhere they gave away movie and dinner passes and hosted a screening of “Aladdin” for kids in the Great Start program. Volunteers even dropped by a local laundromat to give away detergent and coins. 

Even students at Mott Middle College joined in, delivering flowers to and performing a concert at a local senior center.
