YWCA of Greater Flint Marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month With Free Community Events
YWCA of Greater Flint marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month with free events and Purple Thursday

FLINT, Mich. — The YWCA of Greater Flint is observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October under the national theme #Every1KnowsSome1, calling on Genesee County to move from awareness to collective action.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
“Domestic violence thrives in silence, but together we can help change that,” said DeAndra Larkin, CEO of the YWCA of Greater Flint. “Whether wearing purple, sharing resources, attending an event, or supporting a survivor, every action matters. This month is about reminding survivors they are not alone and demonstrating our community’s commitment to safety, healing, and ending domestic and sexual violence.”
The month’s activities begin with Purple Thursday on October 15, when the community is encouraged to wear purple and display awareness materials. Businesses, schools, and organizations can request posters or weather-resistant yard signs by emailing Mary Combi at mcombi@ywcaflint.org.
The public can also view the outdoor Clothesline Project display at the YWCA, 801 S. Saginaw Street, which features T-shirts decorated by survivors.
On Thursday, October 22, “At the Table for Change” will bring local leaders from government, law enforcement, victim services, and other fields together for a moderated panel on the local impact of domestic violence, available resources, and prevention.
On Wednesday, October 28, “Let’s Talk About It: Every1 Knows Some1” will offer a trauma-informed conversation for mothers, guardians, daughters, and young women (recommended ages 13–20) about healthy relationships, warning signs of abuse, emotional safety, and generational healing. Social workers and advocates will be on hand.
Participants can register online or at the door.
Free, confidential help is available 24/7 through the YWCA’s help line at 810-238-7233. Services include emergency shelter, safety planning, legal advocacy, support groups, and trauma-informed counseling.
