Flint City Council: July Roundup

Editor’s Note: The Flint City Council Monthly Wrap Up! is a new series spearheaded by Jalen Garrison. This series serves as a guide to make council meetings journalistically sound, accessible, and engaging.

FLINT, Michigan – Welcome to the Flint City Council Monthly Wrap Up! This is a summary of some of the most important debates, resolutions, and decisions in the City Council during the month of July. We’ll also be taking a look at what’s coming up in the month of August. July was relatively slow-going for the City Council.

There were only two sessions held during the month, and one was relocated due to elections taking place in the city council auditorium in City Hall.

Flintside has taken the time to interview some of the community members who will be on ballots come November.

Councilman Leon El-Alamin charged with election fraud.

• Councilman Leon El-Alamin has been charged by federal prosecutors with election fraud. The prosecution alleges that El-Alamin falsely documented that he lived in Flint at the time of his election to Flint City Council despite being a resident of Mount Morris Township. The next hearing for this case is set for Aug. 6.

Millages up for election in November.

• Flint City Council voted unanimously to approve three new ballot items for Flint voters. Millages for the Public Transportation Services, Police and Fire protection, as well as the Citywide parks, forestry and recreation millages will all be featured on the ballot come Nov. 3. All three of the items would be reduced from their current millage rates.

• Eligible Flint voters will be able to cast their ballots at Flint City Hall from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Aug. 1-3. The final day for voting is Aug. 4, beginning at 7 a.m. and ending at 8 p.m. 

Coming Up in August

El-Alamin domestic and felony trials

• First Ward Councilman Leon El-Alamin has been embroiled in allegations of domestic violence since Jul. 2025, and his trial is set to begin Oct. 14, 2026. He is up for re-election in this round of elections and has made no effort to publicly comment on his current legal situation.
