For a decade, friends and family administered the awards to honor Atwood’s legacy. Now, the Hurley Foundation is stepping up to operate the annual recognition to ensure the tradition continues.

Among all the activity was one special event this year: The single largest volunteer effort on MLK Day we've ever seen. The United Way of Genesee County gathered 550 volunteers at the Dort Federal Event Center to help pack 120,000 meals donated to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and local food pantries.
Old Newsboys of Flint operates year-round with three programs to help children in Genesee County from low income families. Since its start in 1924, Old Newsboys has helped more than 818,000 children.
The HELP program launched at Hurley Medical Center in June and is in need of volunteers to visit and play games with elderly patients — which research shows helps them recover better and faster.
