The Headless Will Blow Your Mind with Space Rock, Theatrics, and Original Music
Andy Lenox of The Headless discusses an upcoming single release, how their formation happened, and what the band’s future holds.

FLINT, Michigan — Up-and-coming local rock band The Headless made their live debut at the Flint Local 432, following in the footsteps of many other local bands, on May 30, 2026.
The band’s lead singer, guitarist, and founding organizer, Andy Lenox, described the debut as nothing short of an incredible success. Their setlist consisted of all originals, including the soon-to-be-released single “Another Cloth”, available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, SoundCloud, and BandCamp on July 7.
In the future, they hope to slice through those originals with a few shorter covers so as not to take away from their own songs, which tend to be a bit longer in length.
While The Headless may be new to the scene, its members are not. Lenox has been playing guitar since the early 2000s, and along with other members of The Headless, originally formed Diver, a long-time dependable pillar of Flint’s local rock circuit.
Diver began in the late 2000s and lasted until about 2018, when Lenox grew frustrated with the band and its album-release complications, and everyone went their separate ways.
“I hadn’t picked up a guitar in maybe five years,” Lenox explained, detailing his troubles landing back in the music scene after taking a break. He bought a bunch of new equipment he’d never used before and dabbled around in different genres, namely EDM and thrash metal, before realizing he wanted to get back to what he does best. “I was trying too hard to do something I wasn’t suited to do…the type of music I write is big, thematic, over-the-top, rock & roll anthems.”
Along with his restart in music, the success of space rock/grunge bands like Dexter and the Moonrocks and Superheaven began to really inspire Andy.
“I saw that kind of rock & roll sort of having a following again,” he described, “I was really heartened by that.”
Then, after all the technical and genre hurdles, The Headless was born. Originally a solo effort, Lenox had a vision for live performances that matched his writing style — full of cinematic storytelling and a bit extravagant — and made the calls to guitarist Gary Behling, bassist Phil Danne, and drummer Jay Gauthier to help him accomplish that.
Their first performance featured many of the fun dramatics the band was aiming for, with theatrics, costumes, an awesome intro, and in-between-song interludes. But they hope to take it up a couple more notches in their future with the help of more audio, video, and lighting effects.
Lenox was originally looking for a singer as well but couldn’t find one and decided to step into the role himself. While he does have past experience with background vocal work, and more importantly, he enjoys it, he never viewed himself as much of a singer until he took on the job for The Headless.
“Another Cloth” fits the band’s genre description of space rock perfectly – it’s space-like and atmospheric, with fuzzed, layered guitar, yet it still has those big vocal hooks to amplify it. Don’t let this fool you, though; The Headless, no pun intended, runs from genre to genre like a chicken with its head cut off. Andy likens this to his own personal music taste. “I can’t sit in one genre with my listening habits very long,” he says.
With inspiration drawn from artists like grunge, subgenres of alternative rock, and early 2000s emo, it’s no surprise they often hop around. Lenox described another upcoming release in August as feeling even spacier than “Another Cloth” and accompanied by a 3-minute heavy guitar solo, while another in September, called “Digging My Feet in the Earth,” could be considered Weezer with a Queen solo.
Adding to The Headless’ genre-hopping escapades, Lenox also plays guitar for the local female-fronted metal band War on the Horizon, who will be playing at the Flint Local 432 on September 12th.
“We’re kind of all over the place…me and my friends writing music is the genre,” Andy laughed.
The Headless wants to continue their pattern of releasing songs quickly, with a six- to eight-week gap between each. The first chorus of “Another Cloth” is available to listen to on their website, which also provides dates for upcoming shows and an archive including full footage of their debut performance.
