Truck drivers wanted: 4-week training program starting in Flint

There are currently more than 100 job postings for local and distance truck drivers in Flint and the surrounding area.

FLINT, Michigan — Tri-Area Trucking and Mott Community College’s Workforce and Economic Development Division have joined forces to create a four-week truck driving course. The first class begins Monday, Dec. 17, 2018.

Classes are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at MCC’s Workforce Education Center, 709 N. Saginaw St. and are part of an effort to create more local career opportunities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the employment of heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026. 

“Truck driving is in high demand right now,” said Dartanyan Jamerson, director of Workforce Development at MCC. “Currently, we are tracking more than 100 local job postings for local and over the road drivers in Flint and the surrounding area.”

To participate in the four-week course, you must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid Michigan driver’s license. Other requirements include the ability to obtain (or have) a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and a temporary instruction permit, and completion of a a Department of Transportation physical and drug screen.
