FLINT, Michigan — Flint Community Schools is set to bring the community together once again for its 3rd Annual ‘A Taste of Literacy’ event, an initiative aimed at fostering literacy skills and empowering families. Scheduled for March 5, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Flint Farmers’ Market.

The event will offer an interactive and enriching experience designed to promote reading and learning, welcoming families to participate in hands-on workshops, storytelling sessions, and literacy games. In addition, the event provides families with valuable tools to support their children’s reading journey, reinforcing the district’s commitment to lifelong learning.

Superintendent Kevelin Jones emphasized the event’s impact on the community, stating, “We believe that literacy is the foundation of lifelong success, and empowering families to support their children’s reading journey is a key priority. ‘A Taste of Literacy’ is more than just an event — it’s a celebration of learning where families can engage in meaningful literacy activities.”

Building on the success of previous years, the event is expected to draw an even larger crowd, surpassing the 500 attendees recorded in past editions. Families will have the opportunity to take home free books, literacy resources, and other incentives to continue fostering reading habits at home.

Attendees will also receive Market Bucks, participate in raffles, and engage in interactive learning experiences led by Flint Community Schools staff and community partners.

DeLynn Smith, Curriculum Development Specialist, highlighted the event’s goal of making literacy both fun and accessible. “We want families to leave this event feeling equipped, confident, and excited about incorporating literacy into their daily lives,” said Smith.

The event is made possible through partnerships with organizations, including the Crim Fitness Foundation, Snap-Ed Michigan Fitness Foundation, Flint Public Library, and the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network, whose continued support ensures the program’s success.

With a focus on family engagement and community collaboration, ‘A Taste of Literacy’ continues to be a vital resource in Flint’s efforts to strengthen literacy skills and promote a love for reading among children and their families.
