Buckham Gallery Seeking Applicants for Seventh Writer in Residence
Buckham Gallery opens its 7th Writer in Residence call for Flint’s BIPOC community.

FLINT, Michigan — Buckham Fine Arts Project (BFAP) is now accepting submissions for its 2026-2027 Writer in Residence program. Now in its seventh year, the yearlong residency awards a single literary artist a $1,000 honorarium for helping bridge Buckham’s visual art exhibitions with the literary arts.
In addition, the selected writer will receive a Buckham Arts Collective membership and will be expected to attend exhibitions, produce 20-22 written compositions, and participate in six community events such as Flint’s ARTWALK.
The program, which launched in 2021, was designed to connect writers with Flint’s Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities while providing a platform for them to engage with contemporary visual art.
“There is so much creative energy in Flint, and Buckham is always looking to support artists while providing opportunities to engage with sometimes challenging contemporary art and experience new ways of looking and thinking,” said Michele Leclaire, Buckham’s Executive Director.
Prior writer-in-residences were Phire Sis, Natasha Thomas, Bob Campbell, Jen Fernandes Veloso, Vivian Kao, and Qiana Towns Williams.
The residency follows Buckham’s October–September exhibition season. The selected writer attends each exhibition and writes responses to the artwork, compiling all pieces into a publication released at a celebratory reading event the following fall.
The deadline to submit is August 5, 2026.
